La Jolla's largest animal charity event is back for it's 6th year! The event is hosted by La Jolla Veterinary Hospital at a beautiful venue in the heart of La Jolla Village. 100% of the event proceeds go to the two beneficiaries, The FOCAS Program at The Rancho Coastal Humane Society and The FACE Foundation. The event features fundraising through both silent and live auctions, a raffle, wine grab, ticket sales and more. The auctions and raffle items range from museum pieces, exquisite jewelry to San Diego sports team tickets, museum, hotel and culinary packages, wine tours, surf boards, skateboards and MUCH more! Of course many La Jolla merchants donate an abundance of high-end products and/or services in support of the community event. The BEST part of the event is that your furry family member is welcome to join you. Let your beloved pet walk the red carpet entrance, take photos at the VW bus photo booth, enter the photo contest and meet other pets that are just as adored as your very special companion. Please join us for a very special night in celebrating your love for animals while saving the lives of those who desperately need our help!
The FOCAS program is managed by Rancho Coastal Humane Society (RCHS). FOCAS funds the fostering of animals in homes all over San Diego County in order to make room at for more homeless animals at RCHS. It also funds medical treatments that animals need before they find their forever homes. FOCAS pulls animals that are living in crowded shelters and places them in Rancho Coastal Humane Society where their chances for adoption are increased significantly and they have a better chance of receiving the medical care that many of them desperately need.
The FACE Foundation is a 501(c)(3) non-profit organization that provides financial assistance for San Diego animal owners who are unable to afford the cost of their pet's emergency, life-saving veterinary care. They aim to prevent economic pet euthanasia in San Diego County and La Jolla Veterinary Hospital whole-heartedly supports and recognizes the extraordinary efforts of this organization!
Art by local San Diego artists, gift cards to La Jolla merchants, hotel packages, museum pieces, culinary experiences, wine tours, museum packages, surf boards...you name it! 100% to the beneficiaries.
A few "big ticket" items are auctioned off in a fun and exciting live auction at the conclusion of the event. The items typically include vacation and "staycation" packages that are offered exclusively to Paws and Pints La Jolla bidders! 100% to the beneficiaries!

Harry's Coffee Shop. That is where the promise was made in 2013. Peggy Howell, one of the most wonderful, genuine, kind and hard-working animal advocates we have ever known, was worried. You see, she started a non-profit foundation with Sue Geller in 1983, and for 28 years, FOCAS (Friends Of County Animal Shelters), was La Jolla's very own animal-welfare charity. They marched with their pets and family members in the La Jolla Christmas Parade every year, they distributed their own newsletter to La Jolla residents on a regular basis, they held countless adoption events, they funded hundreds of spays and neuters through local veterinary hospitals in La Jolla, they partnered with La Jolla merchants and local businesses to raise funds for foster and education programs and their board of directors consisted of many animal-loving La Jollans who wanted to help save the lives of home-less animals in San Diego County. FOCAS was La Jolla's. Peggy was proud of that.
Now Peggy was much older. Friends, volunteers and board members had come and gone, but Peggy was still very much aware that FOCAS needed to live on after her. She had worked so hard and she never imagined that FOCAS would become the driving force that it had become. She had started the charity in her own home, sometimes fostering 30 dogs at a time. She turned her attic into a cattery, and she would tell her husband that she would not take another homeless animal in. She still did. FOCAS started in the homes of her and Sue's home and now 28 years later, it needed someone to take over. Rancho Coastal Humane Society offered to help and Peggy was delighted. Rancho Coastal Humane Society is a four-star charity and she knew that FOCAS would be in good hands. One problem; Rancho Coastal Humane Society is in North County. After 28 years, it was very painful for Peggy to watch her beloved organization leave its home, La Jolla. That is where we, La Jolla Veterinary Hospital, come in.
Peggy was and is our hero. She gave her heart and soul to FOCAS. She gave us words of wisdom when we needed it, she reminded us of what is ALWAYS the most important part of the animal industry, and she stood up for what was right in the face of diversity and always for the animals. We were NOT going to let FOCAS leave La Jolla. La Jolla is where FOCAS was founded, built and grown into a successful charity and part of the fiber of this community. That day at Harry's, we m ade a promise; "we will keep FOCAS in La Jolla." We also promised Peggy that by 2014, FOCAS would be back in the La Jolla Christmas Parade. Peggy was elated. We kept that promise.
So here we are. The FOCAS program is now managed by Rancho Costal Humane Society in North County but every year, at the beginning of summer, there is a fundraiser. It is called "PAWS AND PINTS LA JOLLA." Local La Jolla businesses donate goods and/or services for an extraordinary event. The event is hosted and funded by La Jolla Veterinary Hospital, and all proceeds are donated to FOCAS and The FACE Foundation in honor of Peggy Howell, who passed away in 2014. RSVP is not required, no dress code; it is only mandatory that you love animals, and Peggy would love that!
Do you have questions or comments about the event? Do you need special accommodations? Send me a message, and I will get back to you as soon as I can.
